Dr. Rafat Hussam Abushanab

Dr. Rafat Abushanab is a Consultant Preventive Medicine specialist based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He currently works in the Planning and Organizational Excellence Administration at Jeddah Second Health Cluster's Preventive Medicine Clinic, and serves as a trainer for the Saudi Board of Preventive Medicine Program. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from King Abdulaziz University (2007–2012), and worked as a General Practitioner with the Ministry of Health (2013–2017) in multiple primary care centers. He then trained in Preventive Medicine and Public Health with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (2017–2021), completing the Saudi Program of Preventive Medicine (SBPM). He went on to serve as Preventive Medicine and Public Health Senior Registrar at King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), Ministry of Health (2021–2024). His practice covers preventive and public health services, including vaccination programs, smoking cessation and obesity/lifestyle counseling, infectious disease control, and health surveillance at points of entry. At KAIA, he supervised preventive measures at the North Terminal and worked as part of the PHM J2 cluster team and as a staff clinic physician; earlier in his career, he was assigned to the Health Surveillance Center at Jeddah Islamic Port, inspecting arrivals' health certificates and applying public health measures. He holds certifications in healthcare quality management (CHQM), Lean Six-Sigma (Green Belt), infection control (BICSL), Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. He has authored or co-authored research on infectious disease control at international airports (an Ebola virus mock drill) and on smoking cessation clinic outcomes, and presented research on exercise and perceived barriers among students at a Jeddah summer research course (2016). His volunteer and field work includes seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns, the Oral Polio National Campaign, a study on latent TB infection prevalence among the National Guard population, and COVID-19 epidemiological investigation and field work in Taif. He also holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and a Training of Trainers (TOT) qualification.
