Dr. Mohammed Hani Aref

Dr. Mohammed Hani Aref is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Section Head of Neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosciences at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a position he has held since September 2020. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from Gulf Medical University, Ajman, UAE, in 2009, followed by a rotating internship at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah (2010–2011). He completed his Neurosurgery Residency at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada (2011–2017), where he also served as Chief Neurosurgical Resident (2015–2016), and became a Board Certified Neurosurgeon as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) in June 2017. He then completed a Skull Base (open and endoscopic) faculty fellowship at the University of Colorado (2017–2018) and a Combined Cerebrovascular/ Endovascular Fellowship at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute, Seattle (2018–2020). He also holds a Master's in Healthcare Management from Johns Hopkins University (2018–2023). His practice centers on skull base surgery — including meningiomas, craniopharyngiomas, pituitary and sellar tumors, and vestibular schwannomas — using both open and endoscopic endonasal approaches, alongside cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery for cerebral aneurysms, chronic subdural hematoma (middle meningeal artery embolization) and cerebral bypass surgery. He also treats spinal conditions, including cervical disc disease, spinal cord tumors and dural repair, and manages hydrocephalus and Chiari malformation, including in pediatric patients. He has trained extensively in neuroendovascular and skull base techniques through fellow courses with Stryker, Penumbra, Microvention and the Seattle Science Foundation, among others. He is the Residency Training Program Director at KFSHRC (since September 2012) and previously served as Deputy Director of the Neurosurgery Residency Training Program (2020–2021). He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and 3 book chapters on skull base, cerebrovascular and spinal neurosurgery, and presented at national and international meetings including the Saudi Association of Neurological Surgeons annual meeting, where he also served as a Course Instructor (2025). He is a member of the North American Skull Base Society, the Canadian Neurological Societies Federation, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Saudi Association of Neurological Surgery. He was named Neurosurgery Distinguished Intern (King Fahd Medical City, 2010) and Pediatrics Distinguished Intern (King Abdulaziz University Hospital, 2010)
